THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Business and Professional Women’s Clubs of Ontario urge the Government of Ontario to:
1. Mount an ongoing public campaign similar to the one that the Ontario Women’s Directorate did with regard to spousal battering, to inform seniors of their rights, how to recognize abuse, resources available and to warn off victimizers.
2. Set up and adequately fund temporary emergency shelters throughout the Province where non already exist (separate from hospitals, clinics or nursing homes) for abused women specifically geared to the elderly’s special needs, complete with educational, counseling and treatment programs, as well as outreach programs, 24-hour crisis numbers and local cable television coverage of crisis centre availability in all communities.
3. Develop and/or amend appropriate pieces of legislation and/or regulations dealing with elder abuse, including financial, that require community workers, medical professionals, police and clergy to develop appropriate response protocols for dealing with cases of elderly abuse.
4. Make funding and legislation available to empower community-based groups made up of seniors and others experienced in and concerned about the specific issues of elder abuse so that appropriate and unique support services are made available in the community.
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that the Business and Professional Women’s Clubs of Ontario reaffirm Resolution 1991 (Res 100.60.9) – Respite Care for the Elderly.
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that the Business and Professional Women’s Clubs of Ontario reaffirm Resolution 1995 (Res 100.60.20) – Funding for Respite Care.
