THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that BPW Ontario urge the Goverment of Ontario, especially the Minister of Health and Long Term Care and the Minister of Consumer Services to pass legislation to regulate tanning salon owners and operators, and the use of artificial ultraviolet radiation tanning salons, including banning artificial ultraviolet radiation tanning for those under 18 years of age; and
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that BPW Ontario urge the Government of Ontario, especially the Minister of Consumer Services to ensure the legislation addresses the following Canadian Cancer Society - Ontario Division's recommendations:
1) Prohibit the marketing of artificial ultraviolet radiation tanning whose target is youth;
2) Develop and maintain a registry of artificial ultraviolet radiation tanning equipment in use in Ontario;
3) Ensure all staff operating artificial ultraviolet radiation tanning equipment are trained on operation procedures, maintenance, and how to identify people at greater risk of developing cancer, particularly those with skin type I (fair);
4) Require that signage be placed in clear view of each bed clearly outlining the risks of artificial ultraviolet radiation tanning.
