New fifty-dollar bill celebrates women as "persons"
"There’s been a lot of publicity about Canada's new counter-proof twenty -dollar bill but very little about another denomination unveiled on October 13/04 – the new fifty- dollar bill, that will be roundly celebrated by women," says the National President of Business and Professional Women – Canada, Darla Campbell.
Alberta's Famous Five, the group responsible for working toward women's legal recognition as "persons" will grace the back of the fifty-dollar bill. Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby, Nellie McClung and Henrietta Muir Edwards will share the space with Therese Casgrain, a former senator and Quebec human rights activist who died in 1981.
The unveiling commemorates the 75th anniversary of the passing of the "Persons Case" in 1929 which first acknowledged women as persons in Canadian Law. The decision by the Privy Council of England that the word "persons" in the North America Act included female persons, rewarded ten years of effort by the Famous Five, and enabled Canadian women to participate in all facets of public life including appointment to the Senate. "This is a very significant event. It will be celebrated by BPW clubs across the country," says Darla Campbell.
The Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women links BPW clubs across Canada. It is an equality-seeking organization working towards improving the economic, political, social and employment conditions of women. For more information contact visit the BPW Canada website.
